I’ve already talked about Christmas Markets, but there are lots of different ways to really get in the Christmas spirit, whether you’re staying at home or venturing out for the day.
Christmas Light Switch on
I know a lot of towns and cities have already had their big Christmas Light Switch On. But there are still plenty coming up. I managed to find quite a few around Derby and Derbyshire in some of smaller villages. If you were really hoping to go along to one but felt you’d ma6be missed them have a look at local events pages and websites to see what events are coming up in your area.
Local light displays

If it’s light you want to see you don’t have to stick to those in your local town. You’ll find plenty of houses in your local area that really do bring the Christmas spirit. Bonus if they’re in walking distance to save getting in the car.
Illuminations
I’m not talking Blackpool, but the amazing array of illuminated winter walks you see at many stately homes and parks at this time of year. You will need to book for most, but I’ve managed to find several that still have available slots. If you’re in the East Midlands I have noticed that Calke Abbey have an illuminated trail throughout December at no extra cost and with no need to book.
Winter Walks
There are plenty of places offering Christmas/Winter Woodland walks, but really all you need is some warm clothing, a good pair of shoes and head out to your favourite parks/resevoirs etc and enjoy a crisp winter walk. Grab some snacks, drinks (most importantly a coffee in a travel mug) and make a day of it by exploring nature.
Staying at home
You don’t have to leave the house to join in the festivities. If you’re just looking to keep the kids entertained, avoiding the rain (or snow) or just want to relax at home, there are plenty of activities to keep everyone busy.
Crafts
Obviously this was going to be first on the list. We love arts and crafts, and it doesn’t have to cost much. If you’re stuck for ideas Pinterest has loads of ideas for kids if all ages. Then have a look around the house for any potential supplies e.g. toilet roll tubes, glass jars, or even a potato. Next double check any craft supplies you’ve bought in the past such as paints, stickers etc. if there’s anything you’d missing check out pound shops, discount stores and supermarkets.
If you’d rather avoid some mess check out discount stores for water colouring, I found a Christmas one this week in Home Bargains.

Movie Night
Whether you’re relaxing at the end of a long day, making a whole day of it, or you’re planning a movie night as a family. There’s just something special about a Christmas film, with lots to pick from on streaming services you’ll have plenty to choose from, or go old school and get out those DVDs that sit at the back of the cupboard all year. Make sure you have plenty of snacks, hot chocolate and blankets and snuggle up to enjoy the magic.
Baking
If you’re not confident in your baking skills check out the baking aisle at supermarkets for baking kits. Whether your making cakes, biscuits or mince pies, the smell that fills the house will instantly put you in the Christmas spirit, and what’s better than getting to enjoy some freshly baked treats?
Get decorating
I know the idea of letting kids get involved in decorating sends many a parents anxiety through the roof, but the enjoyment kids get from getting involved is so precious. If you really have to have things just so, you could just alter things around, or why not buy a cheap artificial tree for their room, dig out the old decorations you’re not sure about anymore and let them have their own little tree to decorate.
If in doubt…
Do everything in a Christmas jumper, it’s the easiest way to bring a little bit of festive cheer to the every day.
