Bolsover Castle

As you may know, Bolsover castle is one of our favourite places to visit. It has something for everyone and is brilliant for children.

Accessibility

The cafe, shop and exhibition space are accessible. As are much of the grounds surrounding the castle, and the children’s play area. Some of the grounds are uneven, but we’ve done it with the pushchair on numerous occasions and had no problem. The Little Tower, however, is only accessed via stairs, these are quite steep and narrow in place, so bare this in mind, if this isn’t an issue, the little castle must be seen inside, and the views are extraordinary.

Family friendly

Many historical sites are becoming more family friendly. Bolsover is no exception, admittedly it’s a long time since I visited as a child and my memory is a little hazy. But each time we go it feels like little additions are being made.

There’s always plenty of activities going on during the school holidays, as well as seasonal events such as Santa. Regardless of the time of year kids will love the play area, appropriately castle themed it was also rated best English Heritage playground.

Aside from the playground there is also lots of space for kids to just run and burn off some energy.

A recent addition is inside the Little Castle, whilst there has always been lots to admire, there is now a fancy dress box and mini stage for the kids to really put on a show.

Food and shopping

There is a cafe on site, but if you’d rather take your own food, there is plenty of space to relax on a picnic blanket and some tables near to the playground. There are also lots of places to eat in Bolsover village if you like to explore the surrounding area.
