I know lots of people still think of museums as “stuffy” or not really great for kids. As someone who has always loved museums I can say that, whilst some might be, this hasn’t really ever been the case, and they are getting so much better.
There are museums for just about everything, So whatever the kids are into there’s bound to be something.
When it comes to free days out, they’re also a good option, most city museums are free and during school holidays have additional activities for kids of all ages, many of which are also free.
For museums that do charge and entry fee it’ worth checking out their website as many offer 12 months admission at no extra cost, giving you mor value for your money. Given the cost of living crisis there are some museums which offer discounted/free tickets to those eligible for Universal Credits, as well as discounts for local residents, key workers etc.
If you are visiting with an autistic person, be sure to check accessibility statements, whilst mobility may not be an issue, many will offer concession rates, they will also give details of any quiet spaces and any other information/ contact details in case you need to make special requests. It’s also worth checking whether they do adapted SEN sessions if this would benefit your group.
Taking a look at a museum’s website or social media accounts will also help you get an idea of exactly what they have to keep the kids entertained and whether it’s something your kids would be interested in, whether it’s special events or interactive sections to keep them entertained. You’ll be amazed at exactly what they have to offer.
