Mr Pumpkin- Derbyshire

Some of you will remember me mentioning Mr Pumpkin last year when I discussed pumpkin picking and things to look for when picking a pumpkin patch. But this year I thought I’d dedicate a full review.

First off is entry fee, it’s not free, however, kids are free and it’s only £2 per adult so pretty affordable, particularly compared to some I’ve seen. When you consider the cost of pumpkins it can quite easily tot up, so having a lower cost option is a good starting point.

The amount of pumpkins they have is brilliant. There’s a total of 4 fields full of pumpkins, and include everything from your traditional orange carving pumpkins to your blue cooking pumpkins. This year the pumpkins were honestly enormous, which for us was perfect, although 2 wheelbarrows May have been a good idea because even 4 pumpkins were far too big for the one and it was a bit like playing Tetris trying to get them to balance just right.

If it’s a nice day and you’ve got plenty of time there is a free trail for kids around the pumpkin patch and they get a sweet treat at the end. We didn’t do the trail as we had other plans in the afternoon, but free trails are always a good way of keeping cost down and still making sure the kids are entertained. There are also lots of photo opportunities dotted throughout the fields.

Unlike some pumpkin patches there isn’t an awful lot of fairground rides and such, but they do have a few rides/ bouncy castles, although for us this was probably for the best given that we ended up spending a small fortune on pumpkins. There is also a hay bale mountain and for little kids they had a little play kitchen.

By way of food they do have a marquee set up with the “Witch’s kitchen “ selling hot food as well as hot and cold drinks. There was also a couple of food and drinks stands from your usual local small businesses. We had eaten before going and planned to eat later in the day so I couldn’t comment on prices, we also took our own bottles of water so didn’t need to purchase any refreshments. If you want to make a full day of it and don’t want to purchase food I did see a few families with picnics. Which would have been lovely given the very mild weather we had when we visited, on colder days a flask of soup may be a better option though.

Overall it’s a brilliant pumpkin patch and definitely worth the visit if you’re local.
